Leonardo Ranucci: The Creative Visionary Behind Kajal’s Beloved Ruby Cap

Celebrated for his extraordinary craftsmanship and artistic vision, Leonardo Ranucci brings the precision of fine jewellery to the world of fragrance, having shaped the elegantly sculpted caps of Almaz, Masa, and Ruby for Kajal. Merging symbolism with design, his work transforms perfume into an object of beauty. In this exclusive interview, he reflects on his creative journey, the meaning behind his work, and the vision that defines his craft.
Leonardo, your body of work is a masterclass in craftsmanship and vision. When did your passion for jewellery design first ignite, and was there a moment when you knew this was your destiny?
I grew up in an Italian city famous worldwide for jewellery making, Vicenza. When I saw the first piece of jewellery created and witnessed the joy of the person wearing it, I understood that this was my path.
The Rub el Hizb pattern incorporated within the designs for Almaz, Masa and Ruby is a stunning example of your ability to merge symbolism with artistry. How did you merge this sacred geometry into your creative process, and what significance does it hold for you personally?
I consider myself a contemporary creative. I love architecture and design, and I find it captivating to mix an icon like The Rub El Hizb with precious and pure lines.
The caps you created embody a timeless elegance yet feel utterly modern. What cultural or emotional influences shaped these designs, and how did you ensure they resonated on such a deep, visual level?
It is something innate within me, a perfect balance between the past and the future, as you say, a timeless elegance.
You have such a remarkable connection to the materials you work with. Are there specific metals or gemstones that hold particular meaning for you, or ones that allow you to express your vision most profoundly?
I have worked with all possible stones and both precious and non-precious materials, and it doesn’t become difficult to become attached to something, jewellery creates deep emotions.
Translating your artistry into perfume caps is a unique challenge, yet they carry the same sculptural beauty as your wearable designs. How did you infuse these functional pieces with your signature aesthetic, transforming them into objects of desire?
Kajal is already a brand of absolute desire. The fragrance has an absolute power. It was natural to create this little jewel in harmony.
Your work is a source of inspiration for many. What advice would you offer to those just beginning their journey in jewellery design, especially when it comes to remaining true to their own creative voice?
Advice… do things with passion, be curious, travel, study, nourish your soul with the culture of beauty and then express your vision of style as if it were a joy.
Among your many breathtaking designs, is there one that holds deep sentimental value to you? What makes that particular piece resonate with you on a personal level?
My ten-year collaboration with Fred in Paris has been important for me regarding the quality of the collections, which are still the bestsellers of the French brand.
Looking back at your illustrious career, what has been the highlight for you? Is there a moment or achievement that stands out as especially defining in your journey as a designer?
Certainly, prestigious collaborations with very important brands in the world, but I don’t consider myself to have arrived yet and I want to think that the next collection will be even more extraordinary and beautiful.
